“When we’re considering covering charity stories or events, we are looking for a range of stories. We don’t want to be putting out the same story all the time. Charity walks and runs are ten-a-penny, and they are just not interesting,” said Rayner.
Top tips on getting local TV coverage:
- Unusual and human interest stories are of great appeal. Best is a combination of both.
Stories must be visually strong.
- Always think about what picture opportunities you can offer when pitching stories to TV.
- Getting a big name involved always helps. It makes good TV.
- Stories involving children tend to get a high strike rate, so do those that are quirky and original.
- Don’t think local news journalists only want to hear about fundraising events. If a charity is involved in any issue that’s of public interest, let them know.
