Gemma Abbs: Information & Communications Manager, Y Care

I manage online communications (website, extranet, mini-site, e-newsletters), publications and media work. I edit and write copy for the sites, and work with colleagues on producing publications and fundraising materials.
I got into the charity sector by starting out in an admin role. The organisation I was working for gave me some training and experience in PR and events; this gave me the experience I needed to get my first comms role for a large international development charity.
An eye for detail, good writing and proofing skills, and the ability to handle a number of tasks. Being confident about public speaking and dealing with external audiences, and being able to keep a cool head in a crisis. It's really important to be flexible and adaptable to change.
I've had the opportunity to gain technical expertise, such as by building a new website.
And I’ve travelled to meet the partners we fund in the developing world, gathering case studies from young people whose lives have been turned around through our intervention.
Consider which aspect of communications interests you most and try to specialise early on. Invest in a volunteering opportunity - overseas experience is vital for international development charities.
