Josh Hoole

Job Title & Organisation: Development Consultant, iT4Communities
Qualifications: BaHons, Level 3 Management Certificate

So, what do you actually do?
I develop and promote iT4Communities, the national IT volunteering charity, to IT professionals who want to volunteer, and to charities and VCOs who want IT help. This involves responding to emails from the media, IT professionals and charities, finding case studies and sending them to media contacts and our PR agency, and delivering the annual iT4C IT Volunteering Awards.

How did you get into it?
I started a career in sales, and discovered I liked the talking but not the selling. So I moved on to work as Communications Co-ordinator for Richmond CVS, and did that for five years before moving to iT4C.

What skills and experience do you need to do your job?
You need good communication skills, and knowledge of the press and media. You should have an understanding of IT in the voluntary sector, and of how IT professionals operate.

Any top tips for someone wanting to get into this work?
Go for it! If you're happy to apply your skills within the organisation's aims and objectives then you'll enjoy your day’s work.

Where do you see your career heading in the future?
I would like to continue helping communications and marketing for local or national charities. It’s great to be able to speak to a cross section of the voluntary and the corporate sectors, and learn from the best of what both have to offer. Seeing the amazing work volunteers deliver is very rewarding, too.
