Barclays Stockbrokers yesterday launched National Share Giving Day in celebration of new partnership it has formed with ShareGift, the share donation charity.

The partnership allows Barclays Stockbrokers investors the opportunity to donate small or unwanted shareholdings to a wide range of UK charities at no cost to the donor.

According to research for Barclays Stockbrokers, 31 per cent of investors polled would give unwanted shares to charity. It is hoped that by launching National Share Giving Day it will show investors how easy it is to donate these shares, and in turn generate more income for charity.

“Our link with ShareGift responds to client demand and means Barclays Stockbrokers can provide investors who have small shareholdings and no future investment plans for them, with a quick and simple way of donating to charity at no cost to themselves,” said Des Byrne, head of Barclays Stockbrokers.

Odd lots of shares can cost their owners more to sell than they are worth. ShareGift collects there unwanted shares and then gives them to charity. Since 1996 this resulted in over £12m being donated to 1,500 charities.

National Share Giving Day will take place on 21 July annually.
