The first national writing competition for the over-60s will be announced this week by the charity that created the Orange Prize for Fiction.

Although the prize money for the competition, known as Bookbite, is modest at £1,000, the charity said that if the inaugural event was a success it would seek a commercial backer and establish an annual book prize to rank alongside the Costa Book of the Year or the Orange.

Anyone, published or unpublished, can enter providing they are over 60. Booktrust is seeking short stories of no more than 750 words, or 500 words on “The letter I wish I had written”. The winning entry will be published. The author Gervase Phinn is among the judges.

The deadline for the Bookbite short story competition is March 31. Details can be found on www.bookbite.org.uk
