Communications Assistant

Role purpose: 

To support the Communications Manager with a range of tasks including website content, managing digital assets, press work and copywriting

Daily liaison and guidance from the Communications Manager and regular contact with the External Relations team. Other colleagues within RedR and external contacts as necessary


A)  ROLE DESCRIPTION

Main tasks and Accountabilities:

1. Support the Communications Manager in the management of RedR’s website: editing content, making amendments and working with web hosts to address technical queries when necessary.

2. Identify and make contact with new media contacts: using contacts database and researching specific publications/websites.

3. Research and amend database records: tagging records by particular genre, correcting names and contact details, adding media distribution details etc.

4. Liaise with other RedR departments to produce a weekly Internal E-bulletin for RedR staff and trustees.

5. Manage RedR’s digital assets: sorting through a large number of digital photographs and helping to review and update the storage system.

6. Manage RedR's presence on social networking websites.
 
7. Assist with the coordination of RedR’s attendance at careers fairs and other events.

8. Support the Communications Manager in the collation of information and feedback on RedR's activities and the collation of personal stories (case studies).

9. Assist with copywriting and the production of various publications such as the Annual Review and newsletters.

10. Work with the Communications Manager to support internal departments on use of the Brand Guidelines and toolkit.

11. Carry out other general or communications specific tasks that may arise in the External Relations team.

12. As part of the office team, to assist with general administration duties including answering incoming phone calls to the organisation, dealing with visitors, filing, supervising and supporting volunteers etc.


B)  PERSON SPECIFICATION:

Essential

1. Knowledge of a broad range of communications activities: marketing, press, website, social networking, events etc.

2. Excellent writing and editing skills.

3. Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.

4. The ability to undertake basic administrative tasks such as document and information collation, filing, creating word documents and updating spreadsheets.

5. Computer literate with good MS Office skills in the use of email, internet, Word and Excel.

6. Excellent interpersonal skills including a confident, polite and friendly phone manner.

7. Ability to prioritise workload, work to deadlines and work under pressure.

8. Experience of establishing strong working relationships with colleagues from different functions and diverse backgrounds.

9. Experience of using databases.

10. Initiative, enthusiasm and a problem-solving approach to new challenges.

11. Commitment to the international disaster relief sector and RedR’s aims and objectives.

12. Eligibility to work in the UK

Desirable

1. Experience of communications or marketing activities.

2. Knowledge of the voluntary/charity sector.

3. Knowledge of websites and/or content management systems.


C)  CONTRACT TERMS


Salary: Salary range is £16,263 - £20,781 gross per annum. Salary offered is dependent on skills and experience

Duration:  Permanent subject to continuation of funding

Probation:  3 months probation

Working Hours:  Full-time, 35 hours per week

Location: 250a Kennington Lane, Vauxhall. London SE11 3RD

Other:   As defined in standard RedR contract terms

  • To work as part of the RedR team to achieve our goals.
  • In line with RedR’s strategic goals, develop and agree with the Communications Manager a work plan outlining activities and targets, with timings for a rolling 12 month period, to be reviewed quarterly.

Authority

The Communications Assistant functions with authority from the Communications Manager. The Communications Assistant has authority to use the resources allocated in the annual budget and to manage any volunteers allocated. 

Limitations to Authority:
The Communications Assistant shall operate within the parameters of the Communications Strategy as agreed with the Communications Manager and within good practice as understood in the sector and developed by RedR.  These limitations will be reviewed periodically.

Accountabilities
Accountability in this relationship is mutual.  The Communications Manager is accountable to the Communications Assistant to provide support, guidance and resources and to relate to the Communications Assistant in a manner consistent with RedR’s values.  The Communications Assistant is responsible to the Communications Manager for performance according to the expectations of the post and for operating within the authority delegated.
