Job Purpose

To lead the redesign and re-launch of our intranet to over 4,500 employees worldwide – making sure that it meets the needs of all these customers.


Key accountabilities

1. Lead the redesign and relaunch of our intranet to 4,500 plus employees worldwide, working with stakeholders from across the organisation to understand their needs, and to develop a long term intranet strategy for the organisation.

2. Liaise with external consultancy and Save the Children UK's Content Management System supplier to manage the development of the information architecture and the overall look and feel of the intranet, ensuring coherence and effectiveness of visual design and content messaging in line with Save the Children UK's brand identity.

3. Liaise with approximately 40 UK intranet editors, and get them engaged in supporting the project. Work with them to audit their content and consult on best practice for content editing.

4. Manage the roll out of Content Management System training and support to intranet editors, including the creation of work flow system and governance model.

5. Manage the content development and content strategy for the intranet and migrate content from old intranet to new intranet using Save the Children UK's Content Management System. Edit and proof materials produced by intranet editors – ensuring all content has been signed off at the appropriate level and adhering to brand and editorial style guidelines and online best practice. 

6. Manage a schedule of development for the intranet to keep the project on budget to ensure delivery to deadline.

7. Develop a strategy for pre launch testing, working with the Online team, Information Services, and Save the Children UK's web developers .

8. Promote the new intranet to staff using the internal communication channels.

9. Be single point of contact for all Intranet related issues during project.

10. Perform other tasks as required from for the smooth running of the team, cross-departmental teams, the department and Save the Children UK, and to deputise for the Head of Team if required.

11. Be available to work out of hours as required, for example during emergencies or periods of high media activity.

Internal:  Wide range of contacts across all departments and in the field with staff at a range of levels, including Senior Management and Directors, and in particular a   high level of involvement with Campaigns and Communications, Policy, Information Services, HR and International Operations.

Other: Consultants, suppliers of goods and services, internal communication professionals in the International Development sector and elsewhere.


Person specification

  • Significant experience working on a large, preferably global intranet with experience of updating, and writing and editing content for an intranet.
  • Significant experience of developing an intranet to brand guidelines.
  • Familiar with web technology and have an understanding of the editorial and governance issues associated with web applications.
  • Computer literate, with experience of using web authoring software.
  • Knowledge of HTML and experience of using a Content Management System.
  • knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.
  • Awareness of web accessibility and usability best practices.
  • Creative skills to find interesting ways of presenting intranet content and to generate new ideas.
  • Budget experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong project management skills, with demonstrable experience of being part of a project.
  • Experience and confidence in negotiating effectively with staff at all levels.
  • Ability to effectively plan, manage, organise and prioritise varied and fluctuating workloads in a pressurised environment, often to tight-deadlines.
  • A commitment to team-working and a willingness to contribute to cross-departmental initiatives.

  • Experience using Red Dot Content Management System.
  • A keen interest in emerging web trends and technologies.
