At CharityComms, we believe that uniting communities for a common cause is a powerful way to make a positive impact. That’s why we are excited about The Big Help Out, a nationwide volunteering event taking place on Monday 8 May to celebrate His Majesty The King’s Coronation.
This bank holiday event brings together multiple charities with the goal of encouraging people to volunteer in their local communities. By providing opportunities for individuals to experience the benefits of volunteering and make a difference, The Big Help Out aims to raise awareness and foster a culture of giving across the UK.
Here are some of the participating charities that you can expect to see on the day…
Scouts – Empowering their communities
During The Big Help Out, Scouts are making it easier for people to get involved in volunteering.
They’ll be hosting pop-up activities in public spaces like town centres and parks and they are encouraging Scouts to participate and contribute to their local communities.
In addition, they have published top tips and guidance to assist volunteers in planning and organising events in their own local communities. They are also highlighting upcoming events that are being planned on their blog.
CPRE – Supporting homes for nature
CPRE, The countryside charity, is participating by running their Hedgelife Help Out campaign during May, which aims to build a better understanding of the health of hedgerows.
Hedgerows play a crucial role in capturing carbon and tackling the climate crisis, as well as providing homes and corridors for wildlife. To make it easy for people to take part in Hedgelife Help Out, participants simply need to download the Big Help Out app, find a hedgerow near them and fill out a short form. CPRE will then use this information to build up a picture of hedgerows around England.
St John Ambulance – Month of activity
Playing their part in The Big Help Out, St John Ambulance are creating a month of activity with their St John Giant Collection campaign.
St John Giant Collection is a month-long initiative in June that encourages the public and volunteers to fundraise to support their cause. Volunteers can get involved by assisting with bucket collections, placing collection tins in their local area, or gathering donations at home and work.
RNIB – Offering tech support
RNIB’s Technology for Life service plays a vital role in empowering people with visual impairments to gain greater independence.
As part of The Big Help Out and throughout the summer, RNIB will be hosting online tech taster sessions. These sessions aim to introduce the public to the technologies commonly used by blind and partially sighted individuals in their daily lives, with volunteers playing a critical role in achieving this goal.
RSPCA – Helping wildlife at home
RSPCA are encouraging people to get involved with The Big Help Out right in their very own gardens and communities, by becoming an RSPCA Wildlife Friend.
RSPCA Wildlife Friends help spread messages to the public about what to do if they find sick or injured wildlife in their area. They’re also encouraged to create habitats where wildlife can thrive and be protected from harm.
We love the message that “even the smallest of actions can have a positive impact.”
Samaritans – Running Big Help Out webinars
Samaritans are encouraging people to get involved in their community by joining one of their Big Help Out webinars.
The aim of the webinars is to demonstrate the work the charity does, provide guidance on how to support them and offer advice on what actions to take if you are worried about someone.
You can find out more about all the activities taking place on The Big Help Out website or by downloading the app.
