Reporting to:
Communications manager
Role purpose:
To develop, manage and implement integrated media plans to ensure relevant media opportunities are fully maximised for the charity including support to internal teams with communications and media guidance. To keep effective contact with relevant media contacts, ensuring positive and collaborative relationships are maintained.
Key responsibilities:
Media relations
- Write, co-ordinate and issue media releases and statements, briefing materials and features
- Organise and manage press conferences and photo calls as required
- Contribute creative ideas to generate content for news stories and features
- Be aware of the national news agenda identifying opportunities and bringing issues to the attention of the communications manager, department head or senior executives as appropriate
- Deliver a fast, accurate response to media enquiries including the co-ordination of reasonable out of hours response
- Ensure that all media work reflects the charity’s values and equal opportunities policy
PR
- Organise the design and production of corporate publications
- Manage the brand, authorise materials and publications from other departments; update guidelines as required and advise all departments on compliance
- Manage the PR, media and publication budget in conjunction with the communications manager
- Undertake appropriate crisis communications/ reputation management processes as required
Monitoring impact
- Supervise and be responsible for up-to-date media monitoring and archive materials including external subscriptions; evaluating media coverage and PR activity for internal and external reports or for project evaluations
- Assist with ongoing reviews and evaluations of whether the charity is reaching the right audiences and achieving communications goals
Relationship management
- Develop and maintain a strong network of media contacts and journalists, ensuring contacts are kept up-to date in a central database
- Manage relationships with suppliers for cost efficiency and within deadlines
Working as part of a team
- Through line-management, support and develop the media officer, interns, volunteers or staff as required
- Advise and brief other staff and volunteers on press releases and undertaking media interviews in order to provide professional support
- Work closely with the communications manager and digital staff regarding online content in order to deliver rich content to support media activity
