It can be really tough to get cut-through in the national news cycle. But there is still value in getting press coverage in your local and regional outlets too. This fascinating session discusses how charities are maximising their local and regional press opportunities and how they’re measuring the impact of that coverage.

Regional media outreach – why bother? It can feel like there’s no point in contacting local and regional outlets about your campaign, research or fundraising initiative. If the reach is small, will your campaign ever get the traction it needs? Polls show that readers trust and rely on regional and local news outlets more than national publications. And while few solely print titles have survived the digital era, most outlets have an online presence with a few diversifying into e-newsletters too. Just four major publishing companies now own 90% of regional titles, so there’s a chance that if you get coverage in one, it will be syndicated across them all, or get picked up nationally/globally. In this talk, Jo explores the power of regional media, shares top tips to maximise opportunities to gain regional media coverage, and suggests ways of measuring success too.

Uniting 1,300 voices: Supporting a network of food banks to share our message At a time when local newsrooms are shrinking and becoming increasingly centralised, how do you ensure your message still reaches communities across the UK and feels relevant to them? It’s a challenge that many charities are facing but one that can be overcome with a targeted strategy and effective relationships. In this presentation, Ellie explains how the team at the Trussell Trust has worked with food banks across the UK to secure strong local and regional coverage and become the most mentioned charity in the media last December.
